Keep in mind, though, that an excess of caffeinated coffee can leave you feeling jittery or anxious, which can severely diminish your ability to successfully concentrate.
Can Lower Risk of Developing Certain Types of Cancer
While more research and data are needed, some studies on the link between coffee consumption and reduced risk of developing certain cancers have brought positive results, according to the American Cancer Society.
Though the best way to prevent cancer is actually to avoid certain activities (smoking, poor eating habits, lack of exercise), there appears to be some link between the consumption of coffee and lowered odds of developing prostate cancer, liver cancer and endometrial cancer.
Other studies, published through the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, show a link between coffee consumption and a higher likelihood of surviving metastatic colorectal cancer. According to researchers, drinking 2-3 cups of coffee per day lowered the chances of the cancer worsening, which is a good indicator of a higher survival rate.
Though the study only featured 1,700 participants, this positive connection is likely to inspire more scientific investigation into how coffee can help people who already have a cancer diagnosis.
Can Reduce Your Likelihood of Developing Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
According to a study published through the Krembil Brain Institute, coffee consumption can serve as a form of protection against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
Unlike other coffee benefits, however, research shows that this positive effect of drinking coffee doesn’t come from caffeine. Instead, the positive connection between coffee and lowered risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s comes from phenylindanes, which are compounds created during the roasting of coffee beans.
While unknown to the average coffee drinker, these compounds inhibit the function of beta tau and beta amyloid, two protein fragments directly involved in the onset of these diseases. Since phenylindanes derive from the roasting process, the Krembil Brain Institute also found that dark-roast coffee provided more protection than light-roast.
Since this was the first major study of the effect of phenylindanes in coffee on these diseases, more data needs to be collected, but early results are promising. Considering Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are two of the world’s most difficult diseases to understand, it’s important we take every step we can to protect ourselves.
Can Lower Your Chances of Heart Failure
Recent research suggests there is a link between consistent coffee consumption and lowered risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), for both men and women.
According to the National Institute of Health, three to five cups of coffee per day led to the greatest decrease in likelihood of developing heart issues. In a wide-ranging study including over 1.2 million participants, this range of coffee consumption led to a decreased risk of CVDs that most often lead to heart failure.
Bucking popular rumors about the downside of coffee, data from the study also found substantial evidence that long-term coffee consumption does not in any way increase the risk of developing CVD. This result, while surprising to some, further shows coffee benefits to key aspects of our health.
